Malama `AinaCare for the Land Outdoor Service Project - Friday June 9 - 9am-1pm --- Cost: Priceless! The class of '96 is going to do a service project that gets us out into Hawaii's natural beauty as well as benefits the community and environment at the same time. In order to help us decide which project we will do, we are trying to guage the level of interest. Please indicate your interest by entering the number of people (please include interested non-96er friends and family in your count) that might be coming on the Reunion RSVP form. For example: If I have 2 family members and myself interested in going on the Manoa Falls hike, I would put "3" by the Manoa Falls hike. If I no one in my party was interested in doing a beach cleanup I would put a "0" next to the Sandy's Beach choice (or leave it blank). Enter a number by each of the choices or leave blank if not interested at all. For each of the projects, we need at least 20 people in order to make the service projects possible. If we don't have a total of at least 20, that project will be canceled. We will tally up the interests and inform all who responded what project we will be doing. Project Descriptions 1) Easy Hike/Trail Restoration -- Manoa Falls For this project we would be working with the Hawaii Trails department, Na Ala Hele. This project consists of trail restoration at the Manoa Falls trail. This would consist of our group doing an easy hike in and forming a bucket brigade in order to move and place gravel along the trail to help prevent erosion. The work and hike is relatively easy and the view at the end of the hike is the Manoa Falls. Unfortunately people are discouraged from going into the falls itself because of the risk of falling rocks as well as leptospirosis. The hike and surrounding rainforest is, however, rather beautiful. This project would probably end around 12:30 or 1pm. 2) Moderate Hike/Stair Building -- Hawaii Loa Ridge For this project we would also be working with the Hawaii Trails department, Na Ala Hele. This project consists of initially hiking to near the end of the Hawaii Loa Ridge trail then building stairs and water diversions to help make the end of the hike easier as well as help prevent future erosion of the trail. This is not an easy hike. Participants who keep a steady pace, bring water to drink, and wear good shoes will, however, make it to the top. The view up at the top of the Hawaii Loa Ridge trail is magnificent. The trail ends at to top of the Koolau Mountain range and allows for great 360 degree views that include Honolulu, East Oahu, as well as the Windward side. If we do this project, make sure to bring your camera! This is a relatively long hike and service project so we will probably be eating lunch at the site (bring your own sack lunch). This project should be done by 1:30pm. 3) Beach Cleanup -- Sandy's Beach For this project, we would be helping out the Adopt-a-Park program of the the Honoloulu Department of Parks & Recreation. This project is a relatively easy. We will be provided gloves and trash bags to help pick up the garbage that accumulates around Sandy's beach. This project is largely our responsibility. It ends when we are satisfied with the work we've done. We should be done with the project around 12:30pm. Questions?
